World Up is excited to be co-hosting a screening as part of the African Diaspora Film Festival of the critically acclaimed film, The Story Of Lover’s Rock.  Often referred to as ‘romantic reggae’, Lover’s Rock is about the vocal-led  sub-genre of reggae entirely British in origin.

Lovers Rock came about during the 1970s, a period of time when persons of color in England struggled constantly against racism and discrimination.

The director, Menelik Shabazz, takes a insightful look at the effect the sound had on youth of the time. The politically infused documentary sheds light on romantic reggae’s cultural roots through interviews with the likes of Denis Bovell, UB40, Maxi Priest, and Mykaell Riley. Comedy sketches from Glenda Jaxson, John Simmit and others- a interesting and amusing social commentary, carry through the film.

Reggae runs deep into the roots of hip hop. The Story of Lovers Rock is one of a generation surviving extremely turbulent times and finding solace and themselves in the music.

The screening will be followed by a Question and Answer session with the film’s director, Menelik Shabazz, hosted by the WU crew.
